Suggested itinerary
Day 1: Hammamet - El Jem - Matmata - Douz - Sabria
Departure to El Jem to visit the Roman amphitheatre, one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in Africa. Continue to Matmata to discover the Berber village, a troglodyte house and the lunar landscape made famous by Star Wars. Drive on to Douz, gateway to the desert. Optional camel ride available. Continue to the Sabria camp for tent accommodation, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Douz - Chott el Jerid - mountain oases - Kairouan - Hammamet
After breakfast, depart towards Tozeur across Chott el Jerid, a spectacular salt lake where mirages may appear in favorable conditions. Continue to the mountain oases of Chebika and Tamerza, known for landscapes, waterfalls and traditional architecture. Drive towards Kairouan for a panoramic visit of the historic centre, then return to Hammamet in the late afternoon.
