Self-Drive 4×4 Sahara Tours

Drive your own 4×4. We guide the journey.

Bring your own suitable 4×4 and discover the Tunisian Sahara at your own wheel. Tunisia Horizon shapes the desert itinerary around your dates, driving experience and pace, for one vehicle or a group.

You drive your own vehicle throughout. This is not a vehicle rental or a service to drive your 4×4 for you.

What we can arrange

A route shaped around you

We plan the desert itinerary and arrange a local guide travelling in an accompanying 4×4 for every trip.

Authorization applications

We coordinate applications for the route or park authorizations required for the final itinerary, with the relevant authorities.

Nights and meals in the desert

Desert camps, bivouacs and meals can be arranged according to your preferences and the agreed quotation.

Route ideas include Douz, Tembaine, Houidhat Erreched and Ksar Ghilane. These are examples: the guide may adjust the itinerary to local conditions.

Required authorizations are subject to approval by the relevant authorities and the final route. Approval and access to every route are not guaranteed. These applications do not cover vehicle importation, visas, driving documents or insurance.

Tell us your plans

Share your dates, travelers, vehicles, preferred route and driving experience.

We review the route

We discuss vehicle suitability, the guide and accompanying 4×4, plus your camping and meal preferences.

Agree the quotation

We send a proposed itinerary and quotation setting out the arrangements. You review and agree the details.

Prepare for departure

We coordinate required authorization applications and confirm practical arrangements, subject to approvals and local conditions.

A few practical questions

Is my 4×4 suitable?

Tell us each vehicle’s make, model, year and preparation, including any relevant equipment or modifications. We review suitability for the proposed terrain with the guide before agreeing the route; owning a 4×4 alone does not make every route suitable.

Will a guide vehicle accompany us?

We arrange a local guide travelling in an accompanying 4×4 for every trip. The arrangement and cost are shown in the quotation. You remain the driver of your own vehicle.

Do you arrange permits?

We coordinate applications for required route or park authorizations, subject to approval by the relevant authorities and the final route. Neither permits nor access are guaranteed. Vehicle importation, visas, driving documents and insurance are separate matters.

Can one vehicle or a group enquire?

Yes. We tailor plans for one vehicle or a group. Tell us the number of travelers and vehicles, and the drivers’ experience, so we can discuss a suitable pace and route.

Can we camp or stay in a bivouac?

Yes. Tell us whether you prefer desert camps, bivouacs or a mix, whether you bring camping equipment, and which meals you would like arranged. Arrangements depend on the agreed quotation.

What do you need for a quote?

Travel dates, number of travelers, number and models of vehicles, preferred route, driving experience, and accommodation and meal preferences. If a detail is undecided, tell us and we can discuss it.

A tour followed by a local team

Tunisia Horizon remains a selective family-style service. We do not accept a high number of tours every year, because we want enough time to prepare, follow and adjust every request carefully.

    • Saif manages the first contact and request follow-up.
    • Monsef brings more than 40 years of tourism experience in Tunisia, speaking Arabic, French, English, German and Italian.
    • Mehdi, an archaeology guide, supports heritage tours in French and English.
    • Depending on the route, we work with carefully selected freelance licensed guides to cover more languages and special interests.

The same itinerary can be adapted to economy, mid-range or luxury budgets. You choose the comfort level, and we adapt the organization.
